Chinese Scholar’s Rock
Stone, wooden base
10″ high x 6″ wide x 3″ deep
Scholars’ rocks are objects of contemplation. They represent the natural world but also, in their unique and craggy beauty, they are symbols for strength of character. The four attributes most valued are shou (thinness), tou (openness), lou (perforations) and zhou (wrinkling). The most sought after stones are those which appear to have withstood the transformative powers of nature, even if that effect has been aided by an artist’s hand.
We find this one particularly riveting. It has a sculptural presence, but beyond that it speaks of the awesome strength of the natural world.
