“Fleeing the Garden,” oil on canvas by Bengt Orup
Oil on canvas, gilt wood frame
46″ x 36″
Bengt Orup (1916-1996), was one of the leading figures in post-war modernism in Sweden. He trained in both Sweden and Paris, and returned to his native country to work and teach. He is also well-known for the glass he made. His work is widely collected: there are examples in the permanent collections of the Moderna museet, the MOMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum and many more.
This large black and white painting has an Abstract Expressionist feel. On close examination, the subject is a flower at the end of its bloom–but going to seed with a lyrical energy.
Simply framed in gilt wood. Dated on verso. From the estate of his family.
