Pair of Gasparini Chiavari Chairs

Italy
1950s
Stained beech, rattan
15 3⁄4” wide x 16 1⁄2” deep x 36 1⁄2” high (seat height 17 1⁄2”)

This lovely chair is named for the town in Italy where it was originally designed and fabricated. Its invention dates to 1807, when Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi was commissioned to refresh the seating for the Economic Society of Chiavari. The profile has evolved over the decades, but it has always been a graceful, lightweight, sturdy chair. It has been used by popes and presidents, and become a mainstay of stylish wedding decor.

Ours is a vintage fruitwood pair in outstanding condition.
