Portois & Fix Armchair attributed to Josef Hoffmann
This handsome and important oak armchair was attributed to Josef Hoffmann by the Galerie Metropol of Vienna, in the catalog for the exhibition “Spatial Painting: Artists in the Josef Hoffmann Group”, 1987.
The planar construction, minimally ornamented with geometric forms is typical of the early designs of both Josef Hoffmann and Kolo Moser. The large armchair is in remarkable unrestored condition, all parts original to the initial design. The leather seat and backrest were once green, like the oak body, and have faded to a warm brown.
The original Portois & Fix stamped label remains. The firm of Portois & Fix was the early fabricator of designs by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann at the start of the Vienna Secession.
