“The Weight of Remembering” is part of an open series the fiber artist Kat Howard is conceptualizing that captures the movement and drama in classical reliefs, such as the Elgin Marbles. Howard’s work is inevitably informed by the history–both personal and political–of the oppression of women. She explores the idea of the body as a vessel for trauma, using a multitude of fibers to abstract this idea, but also to create its tactile expression. She is drawn to materials and technical approaches to handling them which both attract and repel, making the viewer a participant in the work by engaging us with its tactility. The wool roving employed in this sculpture is dense and soft, twisted into intestinal shapes to create a complex layering of impressions.

This particular work can be wall-mounted or sculpted in situ.
