These four pieces, two cups and two small bowls (the largest piece is 4″ high), are by the important contemporary Japanese artist Kato Tsubusa. A luminous, pale bluish-celadon glaze slides asymmetrically down the white porcelain forms. The surface is so glossy it appears wet. They have a wonderful weight in the hand.

We acquired them from a respected collection of Japanese ceramics, and they were on loan for a number of years to the Minneapolis Institute of Art before we acquired them.

Kato Tsubusa’s work can also be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Abaraki Ceramic Museum, among other collections.
