Bruno Mathsson set of ‘Mimat’ Chairs
Sweden
1930s
Birch, original hemp webbing
18 1/4″ wide x 21″ deep x 32 3/4″ high (seat height 18″)
Bruno Mathsson was descended from five generations of master cabinetmakers in Sweden. Strongly influenced by the Functionalist movement, he carefully studied the “mechanics of sitting.” For example, in search of the perfect seating curve, he sat in a snow-drift to study the imprint his body had made.
By experimenting with the techniques of bending laminated wood, Mathsson was able to make components of great strength with gracefully executed, minimalist details. He was consumed with the quality of different materials and fabrication techniques.
Mathsson’s “Mimat” chair can be found in his first catalogue, where it is described as “a good representative of a modern, rationally shaped standard-type chair with a braided hemp-webbing seat.” The subtle curve to the crest rail and the tapered legs give this chair its sexy silhouette. The birch wood has a warm, honey tone. In wonderful vintage condition.
