Don Shoemaker “Sling Swinger” chair

1960s
Mexico
Leather and granadilla wood
33″ high x 23″ wide x 28″ deep

A leader of Mexico Modernism, Don Shoemaker created the “Sling” chair in the 1950s and designed variations through the 1960s, including the “Swinger” armchair you see here. Our version, with narrow arms, was specifically designed to fit into smaller spaces. Shoemaker is known for his sculptural use of tropical woods such as granadilla, cueramo, and cocobolo. The organic forms his furniture took bring out the outstanding grain of the woods and their rich colors. He developed systems for links and joints which allowed him to largely avoid the use of screws and nails. This chair is wonderfully preserved, and the leather is original.
