Edme Bouchardon, Venus on the Waters
SOLD
EDME BOUCHARDON (1698-1762)
France
Charcoal and gouache on paper
4 3/8″ x 5 7/8″
There has been a recent re-appraisal and appreciation of the work of Edme Bouchardon, with a corresponding exhibition at the Louvre, which travelled to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Two separate prints derived from this work: one by Louise de Montigny Le Daulceur entitled Venus sur les eaux; and the other by Jean Francois Janinet, entitled The Chariot of Galathee. This very charming work is unusual for its rich use of color, and points to Bouchardon’s abiding interest in Raphael’s frescos in Rome, which Bouchardon visited and imitated.
Cochin called Bouchardon the greatest draftsman in Europe in his time.
Gilt frame is 7 5/8″ x 8 7/8″ x 7/8″
