English Cricket Table

English Cricket Table

United Kingdom
Late 18th/early 19th century
Oak
28″ high x 24 1/2″ diameter

It’s a bit of a mystery how we have come to call this handsome and practical design a “cricket table.” It has nothing to do with the game. In early furniture inventories, there were references to cricket stools and drinking tables. As far as we can make out, it was only in the 20th century that dealers and collectors began to use “cricket” to label circular tripod tables such as the one you see here.

Whatever the etymology, we love a good cricket table. Useful by the bed or sofa, or as a small center table, we like them simple, hand-hewn, and well-used. Even better when the oak is darkly patinated.
