Bengt Orup was a leading figure in Swedish post-war Modernism. He studied in Sweden and Paris, participating in an exhibition in 1938 at the Institut Tessin (also known as the Centre Culturel Suédois), a museum in Paris dedicated to Franco-Swedish artistic exchange founded in the seventeenth century. He returned to Paris and St. Paul de Vence after the war, creating work in the Art Concret style.
Orup was also a designer of glassware, serving as artistic director of Johansfors glassworks from 1952-1962 and 1967-1973. He designed both everyday tableware and larger sculptures.
Examples of his work can be found in the collections of Moderna Museet and Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; L’Institut Tessin, Paris and others.
