Danish painter Herold G. Kristensen (1930 – 2014) originally studied theology but turned to art in the early 1950s after meeting fellow Dane, Mogens Andersen, who became his mentor for a time. However, it was the natural world, especially the coastal landscape around Isefjord, which became his primary source of inspiration. In attempting to capture the spirit of sea and land in its thrall to shifting weather, his style evolved towards abstraction, often employing a narrow color scale and quick brushstrokes with areas of bold impasto.
Kristensen exhibited with The Colorists, a Danish group focused on color effects, as well as in a number of other shows in Denmark and throughout Europe.
