Large and Exceptional Mahogany Desk by Bernt Petersen
DENMARK
1960s
Mahogany, brass
75 1/2″ wide x 37 3/4″ deep x 28 1/2″ high
Bernt Petersen opened his own studio in 1963, after having worked for Hans Wegner. His designs are much admired for their highly-refined and deceptively simple forms. In his best work, as with this desk, the proportions are precise and gracious and allow the materials–the gorgeous bookmatched mahogany veneer, for example–to articulate the form without ornament or overstatement.
This desk has wonderful presence. The size is generous without being ostentatious. The four shallow drawers are quite deep, and one is divided, with a sliding tray for small office tools. Notice the subtle carving of the legs and the apron, and the beautiful original hardware. Fabricated by the renowned Danish cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen. Refinished in our studio.
