1930s
Tinned iron
18″ diameter x 26″ high

This chandelier is an early Tynell design produced by Taito Oy in the 1930s. The serrated leaves arch over the bulbs, and subtly reflect light. A smaller, diamond-shaped leaf dangles from the center. Modest beauty for a connoisseur’s eye.

Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) is renowned as “the man who illuminated Finland.” After graduating from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, he developed his skills working as a metalsmith for Koru Oy, where he was later awarded the title of master craftsman. In 1918, he founded his own company, Taito Oy. The company began manufacturing interior and exterior metalwork, and did not produce lighting until the 1930s. However, Tynell’s lighting designs quickly gained popularity in Finland and abroad, and were celebrated for their artistry and elegance.
