Ejvind Kold Kristensen was a visionary promoter of forward thinking Danish designers. He introduced Hans Wegner to Carl Hansen and Sons, and dedicated himself to expanding the market for Wegner’s designs until he met Poul Kjæerholm, at which point he left Hansen to partner with Kjæerholm. Theirs was a creative relationship, Kristensen affording Kjærholm the artistic freedom he required.
Kjærholm’s designs, with their unmistakable, angular steel frames, were revolutionary for their time. He typically paired the steel with glass, wood, slate or cipollino marble tops of equally minimalist profile.
Several of Kjæerholm’s designs are now being produced by Fritz Hansen, but the rectangular PK57 is not currently in production, and is not often available vintage. Ours has a new cipollino top, with gorgeous green figures that are brought to life by the leathered surface.
