Portrait of a Man by Giuseppe Rillosi

GIUSEPPE RILLOSI (1811-1884)
19th century
Italy
Oil on canvas
4 1/4″ diameter (14″ square, framed)

Giuseppe Rillosi was a 19th century painter from Bergamo, Italy (where today there is a street named after him), who often painted portraits of his friend the composer Gaetano Donizetti. This is possibly a rendering of Donizetti’s friend Giuseppe Verdi, whom it resembles. Like the operas of the time, it exudes a Romantic soulfulness. Signed on verso.
