Rare “Euroform” sofa by Maija Ruoslahti

Rare “Euroform” sofa by Maija Ruoslahti

Finland
1960s
Walnut, linen velvet
84″ wide x 33″ deep x 28″ high (seat height 16″)

First shown at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1968, the prototype for this sofa was built by the designer herself, Finnish interior architect Maija Ruoslahti (seen in the final image of this listing), taking her inspiration from Scandinavian television designs of the era. She has said that her desire was to create a sofa whose structure was simple and completely visible. In distinctly Finnish terms, this meant that the structure was also softly organic, honoring the beauty of the natural materials. She recalled that to make the first one she discovered an old wood-bending device in a furniture factory and began experimenting with it, resulting in a simple, sculptural and comfortable piece of furniture.

These were produced in limited numbers for only a short period of time in the late 60’s. And the one we recently acquired is the first one we have ever encountered for sale.

Fully restored and reupholstered in a Schumacher linen velvet.
