Chromed steel, mohair
19 1/2″ wide x 22″ deep x 29″ high (seat height 17 1/2″)
This chromed steel dining chair is a rare design attributed to Louis Sognot and Charlotte Alix, influential designers of the Modernist movement in France in the 1920s and 30s. With their restrained curves, industrial materials and absence of ornamentation, these chairs are exemplary of the place and time in which they were conceived. The chrome surface has aged beautifully and the seats have been newly restored and reupholstered in a luxurious and durable mohair velvet.
Together, Sognot and Alix founded the International Office of French Arts in 1928. In the years following, they collaborated frequently on interior design projects, including offices for the newspaper La Semaine in Paris and the home of graphic designer Jean Carlu. Their furniture designs, which often incorporated metal and glass, were presented at the Salon d’Automne in 1930 and 1931. This design was likely included in one of those exhibitions.
