Swedish Art Deco Sideboard attributed to Otto Schulz for Boet

Sweden
1930s
Walnut, rosewood and other woods
58” wide x 19 1⁄4” deep x 28” high

A sideboard that reflects the particular achievement of Schulz’s mature work at Boet — furniture that is neither purely Modernist nor nostalgically traditional, but that occupies a stylish middle ground where fine materials, restrained ornament, and excellent construction are held in equipoise.

The case is veneered in walnut, its warm, figured grain running vertically across two wide doors. A horizontal band of rosewood frames the bottom of the cabinet, offering it a touch of architectural formality. The top rail, plinth, and carved, tapering feet are finished in ebonized wood, a contrast that sharpens the overall form while keeping the emphasis squarely on the natural beauty of the wood. Oversized circular door pulls are a whimsical signature of Schulz’s designs. The interior is fitted in pale birch.
