SWEDISH GRACE FLAME BIRCH AND INLAID CHEST WITH ÖLAND STONE TOP

SWEDEN
1920s
Flame birch, öland stone
29 5/8” high x 32 5/8” wide x 17 ¼” deep

Swedish Grace was a brief period in the history of Swedish design, in which rigorous Neo-Classicism and Art Deco formed an exquisite hybrid. Simple lines are complemented by detailed gestures, ancient symbols and the use of rare and refined materials.

The Öland stone top of this petite chest is gorgeous, with excellent fossil inclusions. Öland is a stone that was used widely in Swedish building and furniture design, and we don’t often acquire such good examples of it. The significance of the inlaid images is unknown to us, but we enjoy the mystery.
