Carl Malmsten was a prolific designer. He rejected Functionalism in favor of a considered emergence from traditional Swedish craftsmanship and form. Malmsten’s tastes were wide-ranging, and he believed that furniture should be of the highest quality whether it was simple and rustic or elegantly inlaid with exotic woods. He also felt that the furniture people chose to live with should both reflect their personalities, and offer a sense of “intimacy and repose” in the home.

This pine stool exemplifies Malmsten’s craftsmanship and attention to detail, from the subtle up-curve of the seat and tapering of the legs to the artful design of the joinery. The lightness and size allow it to serve as a side table or a stool.
